Smokey's Volcano Rock Mixtape

The early hours of Jingle Jangle are usually my favourite. Not only is it the calm before the storm, but we get to play a bunch of slow stuff like a lot of the exotica songs on this mix.

There was a big market for novelty songs in the 50's and 60's, and exotic themes of the day such as the pacific islands and the jungle formed the basis of not only the music, but the venues. Tiki bars were sprouting up throughout the states, with the majority in hot coastal areas such as Miami.

Often the songs were covers of hits of the day, though you would also get a bunch of great original songs that may have only been heard at a single nightclub such as the title track of the mix.

Without question these are some of the best songs I have. So pour yourself a Blue Lagoon and sit back to the sweet and exotic sounds of Smokey's Volcano Rock Mixtape.

All killer, No filler

Jingle Jangle #11

It's true what they say, that you don't know what you've missed until it's gone, and for a while there folks it seemed we would be consigned to the annals of history like Studio 54.

However, I prayed for days, listened to a lot of gospel and the Lord spoke to me, he said "it's not time yet Smokey", and tears began to well in my eyes and I rose up and shouted in my loudest voice "Lord, you are a GOODGOD are you not - then grant me... but one wish before I part this sodden place!"

Well my prayers have been answered because after a 4 month hiatus Jingle Jangle returns to Sydney's favourite backroom dive - GOODGOD Small Club.

There will be drinking AND There will be dancing, lots of dancing, to the finest soul, gospel, calypso, blues and rock & roll this side of the equator!

So please join hosts Smokey LaBeef & Smart Casual, as we remove the glad wrap from GOODGOD and turn the temperature up 200 degrees.

$5 entry. 9pm till late.

Didn't It Rain Mixtape

Jesus! Has it been that long since the last Jingle Jangle? The natives are restless you say? Well there is a light at the end of the tunnel. New events are on the horizon and as soon as we dot the i’s and cross the t’s, you’ll be the first to know about it.

In the meantime, I’ve prepared a new mix for y’all entitled ‘Didn’t It Rain’, you can get it here

It is a collection of mostly gospel tracks with a few family folk numbers thrown in for good measure. Keep your ears out for some gems such as ‘Pray On’ by the Willannette singers, an uplifting slow belter that had me clambering for my local church’s address even though I haven’t been in a religious institution since my bar mitzvah 15 years ago. Then there’s the title track ‘Didn’t it Rain’ by Evelyn Freeman – if this song doesn’t fill your heart with joy and make you want to dance you are a soulless devil worshipper. And rounding the mix out is the gospel worlds answer to George Michael, Pastor T.L. Barrett with ‘Like A Ship’.

Enjoy and God bless.

I Got Loaded Mixtape

Smart Casual & I made this mix in March for culture blog Two Thousand's weekly mixtape feature. It was also to coincide with Jingle Jangle's 1st birthday and what turned out to be our last show at Good God (R.I.P).

There are some great tracks on this mix, not least the title track 'I Got Loaded' by Little Bob & The Lollipops, which was originally released on the La Louisianne label in the mid 1950's. It's a killer track and one of the finest odes to drinking ever released.

This is as good an overview of our night as any.
